What to Expect From Full-Service Interior Design (From First Call to Final Styling)
If you have never worked with an interior designer before, the process can feel a little mysterious from the outside. What exactly happens between that first phone call and the moment you walk into a fully finished room? What does the designer do, and what do you need to do? How long does it take, and what does it cost?
These are the questions we hear most often from new clients at Jessica James Interiors, and they are completely reasonable ones to ask. The more you understand the process before it begins, the more enjoyable the whole experience tends to be. Here is a clear, honest look at what full-service interior design actually looks like from beginning to end.
Phase One: The Consultation
Everything begins with a conversation. Before any design work happens, we spend time getting to know you, your home, and what you are hoping to create. We talk about how you actually live day to day, what is and is not working in your current space, what your aesthetic instincts are, and what your budget looks like.
This is not a sales pitch. It is a genuine discovery process, because the only way to design a home that truly reflects you is to understand you first. We look at inspiration images together, talk through your wish list, and get honest about what is realistic within your budget and timeline.
At the end of this phase, you should feel like the designer truly understands what you are after. If that feeling is not there, keep looking.
Phase Two: The Design Concept
Once we have a clear picture of your goals, we develop an initial design concept. This typically includes a mood board or visual presentation that establishes the overall direction: the palette, the materials, the furniture style, the feeling of the finished space.
This is one of the most exciting parts of the process because it is the first time you see the vision start to take shape. It is also the phase where your feedback matters most. If something does not feel right, this is the time to say so. A great designer will not be defensive about revisions; they will use your feedback to sharpen the direction until it genuinely resonates.
Phase Three: Selections and Sourcing
Once the design direction is approved, we move into the detailed selection phase. This is where every individual element gets chosen: furniture pieces, fabrics, rugs, lighting, artwork, accessories, paint colors, and any finishes or materials that apply to your project.
As a professional designer, Jessica has access to trade-only vendors and showrooms that the general public cannot access directly. This often means better quality, better pricing, and access to pieces that simply are not available through retail. It also means you are not spending weekends wandering through furniture stores trying to figure out what goes together.
Every selection is presented to you for approval before anything is ordered. You always know what is coming into your home and why it was chosen.
Phase Four: Procurement and Project Management
Once selections are approved, we handle all of the ordering, tracking, and coordination. This phase requires a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work: placing orders, communicating with vendors, tracking lead times, managing deliveries, and coordinating with any contractors or tradespeople involved in your project.
This is where having a full-service designer truly earns its value. Procurement and project management are time-consuming and detail-intensive, and mistakes here (wrong item ordered, missed lead times, damaged deliveries not flagged in time) can be costly and stressful. We handle all of it so you do not have to.
Phase Five: Installation and Styling Day
This is the moment everything comes together. On installation day, furniture is placed, art is hung, accessories are arranged, and the room transforms from a collection of individual pieces into a cohesive, finished space.
Styling is the final layer and one of the most important. The way a room is styled, the way objects are grouped and scaled, the way textiles are layered, is what gives a designed room that sense of warmth and intention that sets it apart from a room that was simply furnished. We take care of every detail so that when you walk in at the end of the day, the room feels complete.
What to Expect on Timeline and Investment
Timeline depends heavily on the scope of the project. A single room refresh can often be completed within a few weeks. A full-service interior design project for multiple rooms, particularly one that involves custom furniture with longer lead times, typically takes three to six months from start to finish. New construction and renovation projects run alongside the build schedule and are planned accordingly.
At Jessica James Interiors, full-service interior design is priced as a flat rate starting at $1,500 per room, with every project scoped and quoted in advance. Remote design is available for clients outside of Franklin, Brentwood, and Nashville, Tennessee.
If you are ready to experience what full-service interior design can do for your home, we would love to start the conversation.
